Worden Farm Field Notes: January 16, 2018

Bracing for another night of possible freezing temperatures here on Wednesday. Farm members and market customers: now is the time to enjoy cold-sensitive crops like eggplant, tomatoes and peppers. They might be gone until the Spring if the temperatures get too low.

Freezes generally happen here between Christmas and Valentine’s Day, although we have even had freezes as late as mid March and as early as November. Our crop plan accommodates the potential for freezes during this period of the year, and many crops, such as kale and cabbage, are improved by the kiss of the cold. Another nice side effect of the colder weather is that the lack of heat stress and lower insect and weed pressure makes it easier overall to farm organically.
