Worden Farm Field Notes: April 4, 2017

We have just finished harvesting for tomorrow’s organic veggie distributions to our wonderful Worden Farm members. With only two more harvests remaining for the CSA farm membership program, there is more open ground in the fields. After the last CSA harvest for April 19, what little crops remaining in the fields will be go to our final farmers markets through Memorial Day weekend.

Soon, many of the fields will be ready for summer cover crop planting. Cover crop plantings will grow on the whole farm over the summer and be mowed and disked into our fields for soil improvements. The fertility and organic matter increases are beneficial to the organic vegetable crops that follow the cover crops.

This has been one of the warmest winters that we have experienced at the farm. The higher temperatures have caused higher weed and pest pressure on the crops, and crops matured faster and had shorter harvest intervals than usual. Despite these challenges, overall, it has been a good production season.
